The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock band formed in 2007, North Wales, and currently located in London. Childhood friends Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd originally played together as part of Manchester band, Tricky Nixon, later reforming as Sidecar Kisses though splitting in 2007. After the split, they regrouped and returned to Welsh hometown of Mold and formed as The Joy Formidable with Justin Stahley on drums. The band is now comprised of Ritzy Bryan, lead vocalist and guitarist, Rhydian Dafydd, bass guitarist and backing vocalist and Matt Thomas as percussionist and drummer.
Formerly a duo, the band spent three years together writing, recording and finding fresh material before releasing their debut album in 2011. Their first album “Big Roar” peaked at number 31 in the Uk Album Charts though went on to hit number 8 in the Americas Us Heatseekers chart. Following the release of their second album, “Wolf’s Law” which was released in January of this year, the band have released the dates for their 2013 three month tour kicking off in January. The Joy Formidable have unveiled their contribution to Record Store Day, 'A Minute’s Silence', which is being released as a limited 12”. The track was inspired by Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections, and has led to the author and lead singer Ritzy striking up an acquaintance.
The Joy Formidable will release two new songs as part of this year’s Record Store Day. A 12” featuring a brand new, previously unheard track, ‘A Minute’s Silence’ will be backed by the band’s cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Badlands’.
After supporting Muse on their UK tour, The Joy Formidable are excited to announce that they will be supporting Bloc Party at their huge Earls Court show on 22nd February 2013.
