On This Day In Music: Farewell To A Rock Giant

On July 16, 2012, Jon Lord died aged 71. As a founding member of Deep Purple, he helped shape heavy music in the UK and beyond, his organ playing coming to define many of the band’s classic songs. Later, he would embellish the hard rock of Whitesnake during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and delve into classical music, while his session work included the Kinks’ classic You Really Got Me. Lord was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011 and died the following year. In April 2014, his former Deep Purple bandmates were joined by the likes of Paul Weller and Bruce Dickinson at London’s Royal Albert Hall to celebrate his work.
