The Hit Parade Release New Single 'I Like Bubblegum' Today

'I Like Bubblegum’ is the tenth woozy single in The Hit Parade’s 22-year-long quest towards pop purity.

The Hit Parade’s beating heart, Julian Henry, is now rejoined by Cath Carroll. It’s Carroll’s first appearance with the band since the 1990s; her first group Miaow was on the NME’s much-touted C86 cassette, and she later recorded as a solo artist for Tony Wilson’s Factory Records. This single was recorded with Saint Etienne producer Ian Catt. All proceeds from sales will go towards the restoration of Porthmeor Studios in St. Ives, Cornwall. You can have a listen to the single here.

‘I Like Bubblegum’ is a boy/girl duet, a three-minute sneak peek into the first moments of a relationship unhampered by complications. It’s all lipstick and candyfloss, trashy and proto like a made-for-radio hit, traversing across the pithily innocent swoons of a new and young love into timeless relationship rhetoric.

The B-side ‘Zennor Mermaid’ is a good old fashioned folkie lament. It is already an anthem in the bars and ghettos of west Cornwall.

Hit Parade alumni include Harvey Williams (Another Sunny Day, Blueboy, The Field Mice), Raymond Watts and Amelia Fletcher (Tender Trap, Talulah Gosh, Heavenly). The band reached No.18 in the Japanese singles chart once upon a time, and gained applause from John Peel, Janice Long, NME and Melody Maker.

Fifth album 'Cornish Folk Songs' is set for release in 2011.
