Sinead O’Connor Explains Her Twitter Suicide Claims

Monday, 19 September 2011 Written by James Conlon

Sinead O'Connor has offered a statement about her recent suicide threats on Twitter, assuring fans that the messages on the social networking site were simply a “cry for help” which was listened to by many.

The 44-year-old singer recently wrote an open letter to explain her comments on the site, remaining steadfast in refusing to apologise for the worry which she caused her legions of online fans.

Speaking about the comments, O’Connor said: “I am not at all sorry that I wrote what I did on twitter. It was a cry for help and help was received. So it was worth it. I have no shame around the fact that I can be shot into suicidal feelings by certain people's treatment of me. I am no different to any other person.”

She continued, urging fans with self-harming temptations to be open about their feelings rather than hiding them away in shame. She said: "There is no shame in feeling suicidal. Nor in anyone knowing that wave passes over you sometimes. No one should be judged badly for however it is they choose to make their cry of help."

O’Connor went on, claiming that the end of her marriage earlier this year was one of the main causes for her suicidal thoughts. She also criticised those who had made fun of her mental state, saying: "I have often and still often struggle with suicidal feelings when I am subjected to this 'mad' Sinead O'Connor business. It's is wrong. Degrading. Insulting. A breach of my human rights as I see it, and most disrespectful."

She concluded by declaring that her search for romance is still on, giving a plea to potential partners in a final outburst of self-deprecation: 'Must announce boyfriend search very much still on. If any1 wants a suicidal tourettes ridden fat ugly lunatic with a big fat flappy *****..'
