Wednesday, 26 July 2023 Written by Sophie Pengelly

Sinead O’Connor has died aged 56.

The news of her passing was confirmed by her family in a statement this evening:

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

Born in Dublin on December 8, 1966, O’Connor began her musical endeavours in 1986, going on to become one of Ireland’s most notable exports. She was known not only for her illustrious career as a musician, but also for her activism, unashamedly voicing her views and passions for human rights, women’s rights and anti-racism.

Well known for singles such as The Emperor’s New Clothes, Mandinka and Nothing Compares 2 U—the latter hit the top spot on charts across the globe—she released ten studio albums over the course of her career, including her debut album ’The Lion And The Cobra’ in 1987, the Platinum-certified ’I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got’ in 1990, and her most recent LP, 2014’s ’I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss’.

Her distinctive tone, Irish twang and lyrical prowess has led her to pave an incredible legacy which has been acknowledged by some of the industry’s highest honours, including a Grammy, a BRIT Award and the Choice Music Prize.

A cause of death has not yet been disclosed. The singer-songwriter’s passing comes just 18 months after the loss of her son, Shane O’Connor.
