Pat Dam Smyth - Friends (Single Review)

Image Change

Pat Dam Smyth used to suffer from Melophobia. No, that’s melanoma you’re thinking of. Melophobia is a fear of music.

ImageHe wouldn't leave the house in case he heard a song drifting by on someone’s car radio. He couldn’t go shopping for fear of Lady Gaga in the changing rooms. He was terrified of birdsong. So, like an arachnophobic who chooses to confront the problem head-on and put a massive tarantula on his face, Pat Dam Smyth began to write music; and he found that it was the only music he could stand. Big headed much? Nope. Because his music is fantastic.

'Friends' really is a classic song, it just sounds as if it’s been around for ages. Pat Dam Smyth looks like Russell Brand, if Brand had been busking for most of his life neglecting to shave, and he sounds like Lou Reed.

His music is a blend of folk and punk, with piano, guitars, drums and heart. 'Friends' is an ode to just that, friends, and he laments about his own isolation. “Without friends to call your name, without friends to play your games, without friends to walk you home, it’s so hard to be alone...” It’s a testament to his music that such simple lyrics can be so beautiful. Take a look at the video too, if you can. The band stumble around a house – a house that you can’t help think they’ve broken into after seeing that amazing piano in the living room – and they mess around, getting in the shower, smoking, singing, and generally being wonderful.

'Friends' is the first single from Pat Dam Smyth’s debut album, 'The Great Divide'. Go and listen. Go on. What are you scared of?

Pat Dam Smyth releases ‘Friends’ on Monumental Music Group tomorrow, Monday 29th October.
