Sacha Baron Cohen To Play Freddie Mercury In Forthcoming Biopic

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen looks set to play the role of Freddie Mercury in a forthcoming biopic about the pomp Rockers Queen.

Following on from biopics of Jim Morrison, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash comes the immortalising of another icon on celluloid. In addition to breaking down the barriers of rock music, the flamboyant Freddie Mercury is remembered for being the first successful Asian rock star as well as being homosexual in a world of macho stadium rock.

Sadly dying of AIDs in 1991, Freddie Mercury remains a rock icon as much as Queen remain one of the UK's most celebrated bands and according to a report on Deadline.com a forthcoming as-yet-unnamed film about Mercury is to be scripted by Peter Morgan, the man behind biopic films such as 'Frost/Nixon', 'The Queen' and 'The Damned United'.

Also included in the report is the news that comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star as the frontman in the film that is to focus on Queen's early career before ending with the band's massive 1985 performance at Live Aid.

Releasing a statement about the biopic, the film's producer Graham Mercury said, "Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."

It is still unclear as to whether Queen's original recordings will be used in the film. Deadline.com reports that a rights package has been arranged with hits such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody' set to appear. Rumours have been circulating that Sacha Baron Cohen will record some vocal parts for the film, in a similar way that Joaquin Pheonix did for the Johnny Cash biopic 'Walk The Line'.

Shooting for the Freddie Mercury biopic is set to begin later this year.
