Alexandra Legouix & The Sunflowers - Lets Go (EP Review)

A star of BBC Introducing, it’s easy to see why Alexandra Legouix is hotly tipped this year. There’s a sense of freshness to this sunny extended play. Nothing is synthesised, and she has a very real and authentic voice that contrasts highly with the auto tuned R&B stars of today.

On the other hand, unfortunately, this is hardly the most challenging release of the year. Musically there is a Latin theme littered throughout, and jazzy saxophone, reggae rhythms and tribal percussion all feature on here. And yet it’s all slightly formulaic. The title track is about 2 minutes too long in stretching its point – Saxophone solos, guitar solos, and more solos to boot.

ImageThe strongest track on here is undoubtedly What’s the Fun, a funky number with a dose of attitude otherwise lacking in this sunny piece of work. It’s lyrically a bit suspect, but hey, it is danceable. Facebook continues this mindset with Lily Allen-esque bravado, ensuring that the EP ends on a high.

Despite the title, Let’s Go is a bit safer, and a bit less ‘Go’ than expected. However, it also must be considered that this is a debut release, and Alexandra’s upbeat clan can no doubt improve if they tailor their song writing slightly more on the side of ambition.
