Stereoboard Tour of the Week – The Kills

Monday, 14 March 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Three years after the release of their third album ‘Midnight Boom’, transatlantic lo-fi duo The Kills are to return next month with their latest offering entitled ‘Blood Pressures’. Following a previously-announced UK live date at London’s Heaven venue on 31st March, just a few days ahead of the album’s release, the pair have now revealed details of a full tour for May and June, including a slot at Newcastle-on-Tyne’s Evolution Weekender festival on 28th May.

Since the release of ‘Midnight Boom’ in 2008, neither of The Kills have spent much time out of the public eye. Vocalist Alison Mosshart has become widely recognised as a member of Jack White’s supergroup The Dead Weather, recording two albums with the band in addition to the numerous tours and festival appearances. However, despite the enormous success of The Dead Weather - who also include members of The Raconteurs and Queens of the Stone Age – and the recent end of The White Stripes, Mosshart is to return to her main project for their newest effort.

Mosshart’s Kills partner Jamie Hince has also been in the limelight since 2008, although for slightly less musical reasons. Following the break-up of Kate Moss from Libertines/Babyshambles man Pete Doherty in 2007, Hince was seen to be dating the supermodel on a number of occasions. Reports of the couple’s engagement have frequently been alleged and denied over the past few years, although it appears that Hince plans to make an honest woman of Moss this summer. However, although Moss made several musical collaborations with her previous boyfriend during his time with Babyshambles, there has not been any mention of her helping out with the forthcoming Kills release.

British Hince and American Mosshart first joined forces back in 2000 while the pair were playing in other bands. They soon began writing together, although their initial working relationship was very much a long distance one, with the duo exchanging recordings across the Atlantic. Following Mosshart’s move to the UK, The Kills started recording and were soon signed to Domino Records, with whom they released their debut album ‘Keep On Your Mean Side’ in 2003. The album was well received by critics and the duo quickly began to garner a reputation for their anti-popstar stance. Oddly, The Kills were often compared to another duo – the one featuring Mosshart’s future bandmate Jack White. However, fans of the group have frequently disagreed with this comparison.

Since ‘Keep On Your Mean Side’, The Kills have released two more albums ‘No Wow’ and ‘Midnight Boom’, both of which have continued to earn the band an equal amount of praise. Work on ‘Blood Pressures’ goes back a few years to before Mosshart joined The Dead Weather, so expectations will be high for this long-awaited effort. With a new album, a new tour and marriage all on the plan for 2011, it’s going to be a busy year for The Kills. Hopefully, it’ll be a memorable one for the right reasons.
