Charlotte Church Terminates £2 Million Record Contract

Monday, 14 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

Charlotte Church has ended a £2 million recording contract after just seven months. The Welsh singer entered into a innovative contract in March 2010, where investors Power Amp were said to have promised Church greater control over the career decisions within the terms of the contract.

However, it would now appear that Church has exited from the agreement after clashing with Power Amp over a number of key issues. According to sources, the singer had particular problems with the investors’ reluctance to back her ambition for a US tour. Church is also said to have clashed with the company over how the large backing sum should be spent.

British newspaper The Mail On Sunday also claimed yesterday that Church will now be obliged to pay Power Amp compensation for failing to deliver her first album under their deal. It has not yet been confirmed by Church whether such a payment has been made.

Speaking about the decision, a spokesperson for Church said: "All I can really say, because of the confidentiality issues, is that it was in Charlotte's financial interests to do so before the agreement entered the second year of its term. This is typical for these type of deals, which are investment deals rather than record deals.

"I can also say that the decision to terminate the term early, which suited both parties, was made well before the commercial release of the album. The album hasn't been released in the US and we wouldn't tour there until it was. There was no disagreement with Power Amp over this issue."

A Power Amp spokesperson also spoke about the contract termination, seeming surprisingly upbeat about the matter. They said: "It didn't work out with Charlotte and that's fair enough. There was no falling out. It was a mutual decision. They decided to exit the deal."
