Jack White Discusses White Stripes Break-Up

Jack White spoke yesterday about the decision to split up the White Stripes. The singer/songwriter and ex-wife Meg White decided to call it time on the band early last month, after performing together for 14 years.

Fans were quick to question the band’s official statement on the split, which many felt gave ambiguous reasons about the decision. It read: “It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

The statement continued: "The White Stripes do not belong to Jack and Meg anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now, and you can do with it whatever you want."

However Jack White was keen to clear up the matter in an interview with The New York Times yesterday. He said: "People say, 'Why didn't you do this? Why didn't you do that?' Or, 'Don't you owe something to somebody or to yourselves?' All those questions. That line was the idea of explaining to them that at a certain point as an artist, you paint your painting, you do your sculpture or your music, and you release it into the world."

White continued: "You don't own it anymore. You have no control over it. You put it out there to share with other people. You can only hope for the best."

Meanwhile, White gave a surprise performance at this year's SXSW festival, performing two tracks (including a cover of Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away') before introducing the latest signing to his 'Third Man' label, Seasick Steve.
