Rebecca Black Responds To Online Criticism

Rebecca Black has given her first interview since becoming an online sensation for all the wrong reasons this week. The teenage singer has received a torrent of criticism and mocking from the online community for her song ‘Friday’, which has been called out for its unintentionally patronising lyrics and unashamed use of auto-tune technology.

The 13-year-old has received 21 million hits on YouTube, many of which occurred after the video became a viral sensation earlier this week.

Speaking on ‘Good Morning America’, the singer said: "After seeing it go from 4,000 views to 70,000 views in one night, and then waking up and it was at 200,000 views - that's when I realised this was going to be big."

When asked about the negative comments the video had been receiving, Black took a brave stance, declaring: "It doesn't bother me." However, Black did acknowledge that some of the comments have been surprisingly spiteful. She discussed one individual who messaged her, saying: "I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you'll look pretty - and I hope you go cut and die."

She continued: "When I first saw all of these nasty comments I did cry. I felt like this was my fault and I shouldn't have done this. Now I don't feel that way."

Black also responded to individuals criticising her vocals on the track. She performed a section of the US National Anthem before declaring: "I think I have talent on some level. I don't think I'm the worst singer, but I don't think I'm the best singer."
