Let Live - Pyramids Centre, Portsmouth - 22nd October 2011 (Live Review)

Supporting the great Enter Shikari on their first headline show in a number of years is no easy feat, but Letlive, the LA-based quintet, brought energy and focus in abundance to secure their name on our side of the pond.

With the venue almost full, especially towards the later half of their set, Letlive certainly made their voices heard, with their post-hardcore riffs and rhythms slamming through the monitors. Front man Jason Aalon Butler can only be described as a toddler drip-fed ecstasy, as his crazy and somewhat bizarre on-stage antics develop as they go on. Dripping with sweat from constantly head banging and throwing shapes it does make you wonder if he is all there, as he rams the microphone down his throat. If that was not enough he climbs to the top of the tallest cabinet to deliver his vocal lines, and a short trip into the crowd with a well-executed backflip off of an unsuspecting wall does the trick to drum up support and make some noise.

It is not just the acts of the vocalists that got the crowd excited, with songs such as 'Renegade 86’' this band have really got something to offer – and offer they certainly did. Their ferociously precise guitar sounds and smashing drums managed to churn the floor up and start a circle pit with considerable ease.

Your Demise followed up and brought exactly what this crowd is used to from these guys - energy and swagger on stage. The headliners, Enter Shikari, totally tore up the floor with their electronic beats and chugging guitar rhythms. I for one have never seen so many dance moves all in one place as the bass wobbles swept through the crowd.

Overall, Letlive’s performance on this tour is one they can be extremely proud of, playing alongside one of the most dynamic and entertaining bands on the scene and gaining a few fans in the process. As they left the stage the words of Butler summed up the evening, “Thank you is not a big enough word”, and in a true, humble style they left and went straight to meet the fans. Their latest album, 'Fake History', released under Epitaph Records is one that must be checked out, and as for seeing them live I recommend it completely, their energy is contagiously gripping.
