Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has revealed that he has suffered from tinnitus after years of performing live, and regrets not protecting his ears earlier on in his career.
Tinnitus is a condition which leaves its sufferers with a loud ringing or buzzing noise in their ears, and usually affects those who are over 50 – but Martin has claimed that he's had the problem for around 10 years. Speaking to The Telegraph, he revealed how doctors even warned him that the condition could ruin his career – prompting him to start wearing ear plugs and protection when performing live.
“I wish I'd thought about it earlier,” Martin confessed. “Now we always use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try and protect our ears. You can use industrial headphones, but that looks strange at a party. Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don’t think about until there’s a problem. I wish I’d thought about it earlier.”
Martin has now joined a campaign called Action on Hearing Loss, which is trying to spread awareness of the dangers of losing your hearing. Other stars have backed the cause, with Plan B admitting that tinnitus has affected him to the point where has to sleep with ear plugs in. He said: “There's no doubt it's been caused by years of being on stage and subjected to very loud decibels of music.”
