Dilly Dally - Sore (Album Review)

Friday, 16 October 2015 Written by Laura Johnson

The road to Dilly Dally’s debut has been littered with line up changes. Katie Monks and Liz Ball worked their way through three drummers and bassists before the arrival of Benjamin Reinhartz and Jimmy Tony to complete the current line up, but ‘Sore’ was worth the wait.

Desire instantly transports us back to the cusp of ‘90s, recalling the glorious time when the Pixies reigned supreme and music videos were as fuzzy as the guitars played in them. Guitar tone is everything here and Dilly Dally have perfected the art of teetering on the brink of just too much distortion. Then again, when can there ever be too much distortion?

Snake Head is reminiscent of early Weezer, with the added oomph of Monks’ snarling vocals, the likes of which have not been seen around these parts for a while. The Touch truly illustrates the power of her guttural range and, to engage in a game of cliché bingo for a moment, reeks of ‘Live Through This’-era Courtney Love.

Purple Rage, though, is where Dilly Dally really hit their stride. A shot of pure anger, the resulting sound is huge as wailing guitars and thrashing cymbals cut through Monks’ nonchalant drawl.

Green then trundles into view as the record reaches its end, but it’s Burned By The Cold that draw things to a disappointingly downbeat conclusion. Where the record had packed a visceral punch to this point, the closing track falls fatally flat.

‘Sore’ benefits from the production of Josh Korody and Leon Taheny who combine to channel a wonderfully wild talent like Dilly Dally. The result is an impressively proficient sound that doesn’t lose any of its immediacy, which is a rare achievement the first time around.
