Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins And Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron Form New Band Nighttime Boogie Association

Friday, 11 December 2020 Written by Jon Stickler

Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins and Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have released new music under their new Nighttime Boogie Association moniker.

The news comes as the dummers release the project's first two tracks, Long In The Tooth and The Path We're On. The pair began collaborating shortly after participating in a 2019 Chris Cornell tribute concert.

Cast across a driving rhythm, the former started life as an initial drum machine and guitar experiment, with Hawkins contributing additional sounds and lyrics. Discussing it with Rolling Stone, Hawkins said:

"He [Cameron] sent me some fun little funky drum machine with some Foghat guitars and I just cut it up in the computer, as we do nowadays, and we just fashioned a song out of it. I sent it to Matt and he was like, 'This is really cool.' And I’m like, 'You're gonna put real drums on it, right?' We're two drummers in arguably two of the bigger rock bands on the planet right now, and we're not gonna have real drums on it. That's kinda rad.

"I think it could totally be the theme song for Cobra Kai. I’m telling you now, Cobra Kai, we will give you this song cut rate. Karate Kid rock."

The latter, meanwhile, fuses elements of grunge with prog-rock and features lyrics written by Cameron, who also played drums and guitar on the song with help from Buzz Osborne and Steven McDonald of the Melvins.

"Matt is a fucking great guitar player too. As a musician, I fucking hate him. He’s so good," Hawkins added. "When he laid down the drum track for The Path We’re On, he's like ‘Well, I don’t know, I’m not sure what I’m gonna do,' and the second take is like fucking amazing. Duh. 'And you didn’t even know what you were gonna do.'"

Hawkins and his Foo Fighters bandmates will put out their new album, 'Medicine At Midnight,' on February 5. The group will also be one of the acts taking part in Amazon Music's Holiday Plays concert special in the US, with their show airing on December 15. They'll also play a handful of rescheduled European dates in summer 2021.

Pearl Jam, meanwhile, released 'Gigaton' in March, their first studio LP since 2013's 'Lightning Bolt'. Their European tour supporting the record has been rearranged for summer 2021 and includes two BST Hyde Park shows in London, where they'll be joined by Pixies on July 9 and Idles on July 10. Tickets are on sale now.
