X Factor tutor Simon Cowell has spoken out to the public admitting that he is “gutted” to have lost out in the race for the UK Christmas Number One.

Being hailed as one of the most closely contested festive chart countdowns in history, the mighty annual X Factor single was finally toppled by Rap Metal giants Rage Against The Machine who were propelled to Christmas number one after a hugely popular Facebook campaign.

It has now come to light that rival, Simon Cowell, has said to be “gutted” to have lost out with his X Factor winner Joe McElderry being beaten to number one, despite selling over 450,000 copies of his cover song, ‘The Climb’, originally sung by Miley Cyrus.

However, Cowell is never one to shy away from voicing his opinion. “I am genuinely impressed by the campaign they have run. It has been a good campaign with no dirty tricks and without any funding. They have been passionate and worked hard,” Cowell told the Daily Mirror.

“I offered them jobs at my record company. It could be in marketing or perhaps even running the company! This is their first attempt at putting out a Christmas Number One, so they have not done badly at all. I wanted them to come and work for us. I was deadly serious but they haven’t taken me up on the offer.”

Previously Simon Cowell phoned the organisers of the Facebook campaign, Jon and Tracy Morter, to wish them good luck with the race to Christmas Number one. Jon Morter told NME. “Simon was very sweet and it was lovely to talk to him. We had a good chat about music in general and just wished each other good luck. I’ve got total respect for him. That was really nice thing to do.”

Yesterday evening, organisers of the campaign cracked open the champagne after hearing the Rage track, ‘Killing In The Name’, announced as the official British Christmas number one.
