Elvis Costello Aids Louis Armstrong Museum With Boxset Boycott

English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello has given a unique gift to the Louis Armstrong House Museum – he’s sent fans in their scores to the museum, which is the only place in the world where fans can pick up his ‘Satchmo: Ambassador of Jazz’, the monumental, career-spanning Louis Armstrong boxed set recommended by Costello himself.

Costello spoke out to his own fans through his website to advise that they DON’T buy his own boxed set ‘The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook’, noting that its suggested retail price of $329.99 “appears to be either a misprint or a satire.” But, not to leave his fans without a helping of Jazz this Christmas, he instead advised they go out and purchase Armstrong’s boxset instead.

“If you should really want to buy something special for your loved one at this time of seasonal giving,” he wrote, “we can whole-heartedly recommend, Ambassador Of Jazz. It’s a cute little imitation suitcase, covered in travel stickers and embossed with the name ‘Satchmo’, but more importantly containing TEN re- mastered albums by one of the most beautiful and loving revolutionaries who ever lived – Louis Armstrong. The box should be available for under one hundred and fifty American dollars and includes a number of other tricks and treats. Frankly, the music is vastly superior.”

The self-less move has really helped out the museum, which purchased every remaining copy of the boxset from distributors, meaning (after Amazon stock ran out) it was the only place in the country to get your hands on it.
