Richard Ashcroft Storms Off Stage At Australian Festival

Singer-songwriter Richard Ashcroft walked offstage during a show in Australia last weekend, claiming he was unable to perform having weakened his voice through a busy schedule of gigs.

Currently touring Australia with his new outfit United Nations of Sound, sticking to a tight schedule Richard Ashcroft recently played three gigs in two days. Playing last weekend at the Splendour in the Grass festival, the former Verve singer walked off stage during the first song of the set claiming his voice had gone.

Never one of the most predictable figures in music, Richard Ashcroft and his band were playing one of the side stages as the festival while Empire of the Sun and Pixies played elsewhere on site. Rumour has it that, whilst arriving on stage, Ashcroft appeared agitated by the size of the small audience that he and the band had attracted with spectators saying that one of the first things Ashcroft said on stage was “Welcome to our little patch.” An apparent dig at the small crowd gathered.

Failing to finish the first song, Ashcroft is said to have dropped his microphone and ‘stormed off’, though the crowd and into the festival site. The band’s management have since played down the accusations that the star walked off due to crowd envy, claiming it was his weakened voice that irritated the singer.

“After three gigs in two days, including a two-hour show in Sydney on Saturday night, we knew Richard would have to look after his voice for the Splendour in the Grass set, so we cancelled all promotional activity for Sunday. It wasn’t until he got on stage on Sunday night at Splendour that he realised his voice wouldn’t make it through the set.”

The debut album from United Nations Of Sound is out now.
