Frightened Rabbit - Shepherd's Bush Empire, London - December 1st 2010 (Live Review)

Scottish quintet Frightened Rabbit might have been forgiven for calling tonight’s gig off, although as they tell the crowd the English are making a big fuss out of nothing. The band kick off with ‘Things’, the lead track of their new album, ‘The Winter of Mixed Drinks’. The song builds from meaningless noise into the kind of indie-rock song that the band do best.

ImageCrowd pleaser ‘The Modern Leaper’ follows, their top played song on Spotify. Again, the song slowly builds from just an acoustic guitar to a cacophony of noise. The band seem content to follow new with old, as they go from ‘Nothing Like You’ to ‘Old Old Fashioned’, and ‘Head Rolls Off’ leads on from ‘Not Miserable’. A few songs later the backing band goes off to leave lead singer, Scott Hutchinson, onstage to play another fan favourite, ‘Good Arms vs Bad Arms’. The band rejoin fo ‘The Wrestle’ before one of the highlights of the evening, ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’, the debut single from the latest album. The penultimate song, ‘Living In Colour’ lives up to its predecessor before they finish the set with ‘Keep Yourself Warm’.

The encore sees just Hutchinson take to the stage again for ‘Poke’. Although most of the crowd don’t seem to know the words it proves a hair raising moment for those that do, the most poignant of lyrics are Frightened Rabbit’s speciality. The (almost) dance number ‘The Twist’ is the same. A story of somebody looking for love. Finally the band end with ‘The Lonliness and the Scream’. A fitting way to end a masterpiece of an evening.
