Stereoboard Tour of the Week – The Vaccines

Friday, 04 February 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

After previously being confirmed as the opening act for Crystal Castles, Magnetic Man and Everything Everything at this month’s Shockwaves NME Awards Tour, it seems that London four-piece The Vaccines have already surpassed the prominence of the other bands on the bill before the tour has even begun. Over the past couple of months since the tour was announced, The Vaccines have managed to create a buzz that can be heard up and down the country and has now reached a deafening level that is almost impossible to ignore. That’s no small feat either. Especially when you bear in my mind that they are yet to release an album.

However, it’s recently been confirmed that an album is in fact on the way. ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?’ is due out on 21st March and has already been preceded by a single – last week’s ‘Post Break-up Sex’, which has since managed to find its way into the Top 40. The even better news that follows that of the album is the fresh announcement that it will be followed soon after by yet more live dates. Only a few days after the release of ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?’, the band will begin a string of UK headlining shows beginning on 26th March in Belfast and running through to their previously-confirmed dates at the Electric Ballroom in London.

ImageFew could deny that The Vaccines have come a long way in an astonishingly short amount of time. After forming only last year, the band soon followed their foundation with some practically overnight success. One of their earliest tracks ‘If You Wanna’, which is due to be released next month as the lead single from ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?’, received regular airplay on Radio 1 not long after the group’s first few gigs. They played their first full UK tour in September and released their debut single, a double A-side entitled ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)’/’Blow It Up’, two months later.

Completing a hectic year with their addition to the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour, The Vaccines recorded their first radio session for Marc Riley’s show on BBC 6 Music and performed a number of songs on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’.

It’s undoubted that The Vaccines are going to be one of the bands of 2011, but we won’t really know until the album comes out in March just how huge they are going to be. Whatever happens, the one thing that is certain is that it is going to be another crazy and challenging year for a band that are still very much in their infancy. With so much going on around them at the moment and with so much hype following them wherever they go, it’s probably even fair to say that this could be a make-or-break situation. Either way, good luck to them and, if it’s the former, we could be hearing a lot more from them for a few years to come.
