Brian McFadden Criticised For ‘Promoting Date Rape’

Monday, 28 February 2011 Written by James Conlon

Ex-Westlife member Brian McFadden has been criticised for “promoting date rape” with the controversial lyrics to his latest single. The Irish singer has recieved a series of complaints about the content of his upcoming release 'Just The Way You Are (Drunk At The Bar)'.

The song is a banjo-fuelled club ‘banger’, mixing a fast-paced beat with synth backing to create a track reminiscent of the early 90s pop scene. However, McFadden has been criticised not for the (shockingly bad) song itself, but for the lyrics. During the chorus of the song, he sings: “I like you just the way you are / drunk and s*** dancing at the bar, / I like it, and I can’t wait to get you home so I can do some damage.” McFadden also regularly alternates the final line with: “I like it, and I can’t wait to get you home so I can take advantage”.

Critics have been quick to pick up on the terms ‘do some damage’ and ‘take advantage’, claiming that the singer was seen to be condoning actions which could, in some circumstances, lead to crimes such as abuse or date rape.

However, the singer was quick to defend his lyrics, claiming that it was about his fiancée Delta Goodrem’s tipsy mannerisms. He said: “Some guys get really annoyed, they get all peed off because their girlfriend has had a few drinks, but for me I actually find it cute and adorable, and I watch her and I keep laughing because she just giggles the whole time...and then obviously it’s just boy slang, I’m not actually saying I’m going to do some damage. It’s quite an Irish thing to say - how that’s been twisted into that I’m promoting date rape is just crazy.”
