Oscar-Winning Irish Musician And Actor Glen Hansard Dies Aged 56

Glen Hansard has died in a motorcycle crash aged 56.

The Irish musician and actor died in the early hours of Wednesday morning (July 29) following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in west Dublin. Emergency services were called shortly before 4.30am, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His management company, ATC, said in a statement:

"With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning. We are still dealing with the shock of it all, so we kindly ask that the privacy of Glen's family, colleagues and friends is respected at this difficult time."

Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard played a member of a Dublin soul band in the 1991 movie The Commitments and won an Oscar for Falling Slowly, the song he wrote and performed with Markéta Irglová in the film Once, which follows a struggling musician who falls in love with a woman he meets through music.

He was the long-time frontman for rock band The Frames, toured with Bob Dylan, earned a Grammy nomination in 2016 for his second studio album 'Didn't He Ramble', and formed The Swell Season with Irglová, with the duo releasing their latest album 'Forward' last summer.

His most recent solo album, 'All That Was East Is West of Me Now', arrived in 2023. This year, he released 'Don't Settle (Transmissions East & West) Vol. 1 and 2', an expansive collection of live reinterpretations of songs from across his solo career, as well as his work with The Frames and The Swell Season.
