The Hoosiers “Sickened” Over Label Attitude Towards ‘Choices’

Friday, 25 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

The Hoosiers have expressed their frustration at their label’s attitude towards the chart positioning of the band’s latest single, ‘Choices’. Speaking to The Guardian, the band admitted that their Number 11 placement on the singles chart was treated as a failure by their record label, RCA.

The label decided not to release another single from the band’s sophomore LP ‘The Illusion Of Safety’, also choosing to terminate any financing of its promotion. RCA later decided to abandon the album completely, returning the master tapes of the record to the band.

Speaking to The Guardian, singer Irwin Sparkes said: "The impression we got is that after two years away we'd done well. We were really pleased. But it only got to number 11. And that wasn't high enough."

Drummer Al Sharland continued: "It's really sickening how much those few chart positions matter. If you get on the big TV shows you start hitting big audiences, and those big shows pick their bands based on whether they've had a top 10 or not...It's all bollocks, really, and it shouldn't make any difference. But it does, apparently."

The Hoosiers are now contemplating a re-release of the album on their own terms through Angelic Union, adding extra tracks onto the LP. Speaking about the potential re-release, Al Sharland said: "There's a little bit of doubt about an album that's already been released, to all intents and purposes. At the minute we've got enough money just to tick along and go to radio and test the water with a single, and hopefully work from there... for a pop band signed to a major, radio play is the be-all and end-all."
