The Vaccines Claim Hype Wasn’t Manufactured

Tuesday, 29 March 2011 Written by James Conlon

The Vaccines have asserted that the hype surrounding the group when they initially broke into the music scene was entirely organic, not instigated by a PR campaign. Speaking to Absolute Radio earlier this week, singer Justin Young said that the publicity surrounding the band’s first show at The Flowerpot in London was simply the result of talent rather than being a covert publicity stunt.

The much-publicised show was attended by Marcus Mumford, Alex Kapranos and a hoard of journalists who were eager to see the band that Clash Music described as “"a game changer that will launch a hundred wannabees". However, Young was quick to deny that the show, which left 200 eager fans outside without tickets, was a PR stunt. He said: "I guess it is something that happens. I guess there's... I don't know, you know what Chinese whispers are like - there's always a good, boring explanation for everything. Alex was there because we've got the same manager, Marcus [Mumford] was there because he's my friend, and then obviously people like a good story, don't they?"

He continued: "Essentially it was just a gig in a pub and it was full, which was exciting and fun, but I don't think any of us were really too concerned with who it was full with."

The band were clearly full of self-confidence: when asked if they felt that any other emerging artists deserved the acclaim that they were receiving, Young simply replied: “No.”

Some have claimed that The Vaccines were a planned reinvention for young, who gained some media attention with his former folk-troubadour alias ‘Jay Jay Pistolet’. You can watch Justin Young performing ‘We Are Free’ as Jay Jay Pistolet below:
