Villagers "Surprised" By Ivor Novello Nomination

Irish singer/songwriter Conor O'Brien has confessed his surprise at being nominated in one of the top categories at this year’s Ivor Novello awards. O’Brien’s musical outfit Villagers have been nominated for 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically', picking up the nod for their debut single 'Becoming A Jackal'.

Speaking to Digital Spy, O’Brien confessed that he felt humbled by the accolade. He said: "It feels awesome. I'm surprised, I'm very humbled by it. I've just got back from touring from Istanbul, so to come back to something like this is a total culture shock!"

O’Brien continued to discuss the original formulation of the track, describing the experience as “arduous”: "It was very long and arduous. I have about six or seven different demos of it in different arrangements. It was initially a drawing, and that became a chord structure. It's build around the idea of human beings as scavengers. It came from a cynical place, and I wanted to create something beautiful out of it. Now people are offering me prizes for it!"

He continued: "It could put pressure on my next record, but I'm going to make sure it doesn't. I' m going to follow my own path and see where it takes me next. I have no idea what the next record is going to sound like, and I like that."

The Ivor Novello Awards are scheduled for May 19th in London’s Grosvenor House.

Villagers were also nominated for last year’s prestigious Mercury Prize, eventually losing out to minimalist rockers The XX.
