No prizes for guessing who we picked for this week’s Stereoboard Tour of the Week. However, if you are struggling to figure it out, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover who we chose. It is, of course, Motorhead. That’s right – after reaching the 35 year mark with 2010’s anniversary tour, did you really think Lemmy and co were going to call it quits? If we’ve learnt anything about the legendary mutton-chopped rocker over the past three and a half decades, it’s that this is a man who doesn’t quit anything. Ever.
Last month, the trio confirmed details of their annual November tour and tickets are due to go on sale at the end of this week. The new dates will mark the band’s first proper UK tour since the release of their TWENTIETH album ‘The World is Yours’ earlier this year. It also follows the recent DVD release of ‘Lemmy: The Movie’ – a documentary film dedicated to the world’s greatest living rock’n’roll legend.
Lemmy formed Motorhead in 1975 when, at almost 30, he was fired from the band Hawkwind. While not original members, guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil “Philty Animal” Taylor joined Motorhead a short time later and the trio recorded the band’s first five albums together. These included their fourth effort ‘Ace of Spades’, which reached Number 4 in the UK Albums Chart and still remains their highest chart success to date. The album featured the title track ‘Ace of Spaces’, which has since become known as Motorhead’s trademark song.
With the exception of Lemmy, who has continued to remain as the band’s only permanent member, Motorhead has gone through a number of line-up changes throughout its 35-year history. Current guitarist Phil Campbell is the group’s second longest-standing member, having joined in 1984. Following the recruitment of drummer Mikkey Dee in 1991, the Motorhead line-up has remained constant for almost 20 years and the three members have recorded ten albums together – exactly half of the band’s discography to date.
In addition to his work with Motorhead and Hawkwind, Lemmy has made numerous contributions to other bands and projects over the years. The more recent of these include the track ‘Shake Your Blood’, from Dave Grohl’s side project Probot in 2004, and ‘Doctor Alibi’, from Slash’s solo album. For the latter example, both artists took turns performing together at last year’s Download Festival.
