Radio 1 Confirm Free Music Festival for London Olympics 2012

BBC Radio 1 has announced that they will be organising a massive free music festival in honour of the 2012 Olympics.

Christened as ‘the Hackney Weekend’, the event will have up to 100,000 free tickets, making it the largest free music festival or event the BBC has ever hosted. It will be held in the Hackney Marshes, and is currently scheduled for the 23rd to the 24th of June next year – seven days before the beginning of the games.

Organisers have revealed that there will be a huge range of big name musicians spread over six stages, with London locals Plan B and Leona Lewis already confirmed to play at the summer event. It will be music to festival goer’s ears, as it replaces the massive Glastonbury festival which is set to take a year out in 2012.

Lewis, winner of 2006’s X-Factor, said: “I'm so excited about the excitement it will bring to the area, Radio 1 are going to put on the biggest show in their history and it is happening in East London - I couldn't be happier.”

It also takes the place of the annual Big Weekend, which was this year headlined by Lady Gaga and the Foo Fighters. More announcements of artists are set to be made over the coming months in the run up to the massive Olympics in London next year, with over 80 acts hoped to be confirmed in total.
