The BBC have responded to criticism over the number of staff that they have sent to cover Glastonbury Festival over previous years, denying accusations insinuating that the corporation offer the event as “corporate hospitality” to certain members of staff.
BBC executive Andy Parfitt was forced to make a comment on claims made by The Daily Mail this Sunday (June 5th), which heavily criticised the tax-funded corporation for block-booking over 200 luxury hotel rooms for this year’s event: a move which is said to have cost the taxpayer over £1.7 million last year.
Writing on the official BBC blog, Parfitt wrote: "Every year we have to counter the charge that the numbers of backstage talent the BBC sends to create Glastonbury is excessive. If the figures were 600, 300 or 100 people I don't think it would make any difference. Last year we sent 274 staff and freelancers and this year it will be less."
Parfitt went on to respond to allegations made by the paper claiming that the BBC offer the event as a “hospitality” for certain members of staff. He continued: "There is certainly no 'junket'. There's no BBC corporate hospitality and any BBC executives attending will also be working. Every member of staff onsite has a clear and accountable role - working hard and extremely long hours to offer unparalleled coverage."
Glastonbury will take place from June 24th-26th this year, with U2, Coldplay and Beyonce set to perform headline slots.
