Since 2013, Jungle have entertained huge audiences with an infectious blend of indie, neo-soul, and dance across four eclectic albums. Their popularity, though, has arguably never been higher, creating a sense of anticipation for their fifth release, the aptly titled ‘Sunshine’. As the name suggests, it’s the perfect accompaniment for the latter part of summer; another winner from the trio that builds on the foundations of previous releases while hinting at fresh directions.
The opener Come Back To Me sets the tempo for what is a celebratory, invigorating record, while the title track is one of the strongest put out by the group to date. It is irrepressible, and it is something of a surprise that it wasn’t put out as a single before the album’s release. It captures the joy, harmony and optimistic nature of Jungle’s sound in one succinct package.
It is a tall order to follow such a strong start, yet the group continue to push forward. Where Are You Now? brings more of a funk flavour, particularly in its guitar tones, while Lydia Kitto’s vocals keep it feeling distinctly Jungle.
Carry On allows Kitto’s vocals to take the lead, with fewer effects than have been employed on earlier releases.
It’s a more stripped back track but nonetheless effective, offering a more relaxed vibe, perfect for an early summer evening. It’s soothing and luscious. The Wave draws influence from Brazilian music of the 1960s and ‘70s. It is a marriage that works well and it would be an interesting direction for the trio to pursue more in future.
One of the strengths of ‘Sunshine’ is its relatively slight runtime, coming in just over 30 minutes but cramming in so many textures and details. Coming in at two and a half minutes, Someday, Somewhere could feel rushed but every moment is purposeful and carefully plotted. It’s a real gem. This feels like a reminder of why Jungle are in the position they’re in and will further cement their status as one of Britain’s biggest and most creatively diverse groups.
