Jack White helped to define an indie-rock era with the White Stripes’ distinctive blend of alt-rock and scuzzy blues, but his solo career has been more eclectic, seeking new sounds instead of simply regurgitating what came before.
In 2024, though, ‘No Name’ offered a return to the dirty, raw sound of his old band, being welcomed with open arms by his fanbase and becoming one of the most acclaimed releases of his career. No pressure, then, for its follow-up ‘Frozen Charlotte’, which continues in a similar vein without ever truly feeling like lightning striking twice.
It’s apparent from the first taste of the record, G.O.D and The Broken Ribs, that this is once again White cutting loose, with heavy riffs left, right and centre.
But where ‘No Name’, while still built around the blues, had plenty of variety and poppier flourishes, this record feels more like White on autopilot.
Tracks like Derecho Demonico display his guitar prowess but the extended soloing and hyper-focus on that aspect of his craft can grate when there is something lacking elsewhere.
‘Frozen Charlotte’ is certainly not a bad record, but wat it brings in ferocity and explosive guitar work it lacks in subtlety and variety. It’s 42 minutes long but feels longer — it’s overly repetitive in a manner ‘No Name’ was not, with Raising The Grain and There’s Nobody There heavy offerings that go around in circles somewhat. Coming off a recent career high point expectations were high, but this is a frustrating missed opportunity.
