Graham Coxon - Castle Park (Album Review)

After leaving Blur in 2002, guitarist Graham Coxon kickstarted a moderately successful solo career while regularly contributing to other projects. At the same time as recording his eighth solo album ‘A+E’ in 2011, Coxon also made ‘Castle Park’, which was shelved due to his commitments with a reunited Blur. Now, it’s getting a long-overdue release.

Coxon has described it as a power-pop record, and his guitar work shines through its many ‘60s and ‘70s influences. Given this era was an influence on Blur albums such as ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’, it is not a million miles away from some former glories. Alright, in particular, could be a long-lost Blur track.

It’s apparent from the off that the axing of this record was purely a commercial decision and not one based on quality.

This is some of the strongest work in Coxon’s solo catalogue, cementing his musical growth and the strength of his work away from his band. Even a cover of The Nerves’ When You Find Out really lets Coxon leave his stamp on it, not feeling out of place with the vibe of the rest of the record.

Isn’t It Funny slightly ditches the jangle and power-pop found elsewhere for a more psychedelic interlude. It offers a showcase for the range of influences on Coxon, still keeping a ‘60s vibe, even if a slightly different one.

This is both an accessible yet experimental record, Coxon striking a perfect sweet spot. For fans of Coxon’s solo career, it is frustrating that this record has been buried for 15 years. It’s him doing what he does best, putting his songwriting, underrated vocal talents and guitar prowess front and centre.
