Arriving almost 25 years on from Evanescence inserting themselves into the pop-culture consciousness as purveyors of glossy gothic rock, ‘Sanctuary’ feels like a return to their roots. Beautiful Lie, for example, possesses the kind of metallic punch boasted by 2011’s self-titled album alongside electronic pulses courtesy of ex-Bring Me The Horizon member Jordan Fish. It’s a compelling opening.
Tell Me When You’ve Had Enough follows suit with a crunching riff that really highlights how cleanly produced this record is, before they slow things down with the haunting Who Will You Follow, a piano-led ballad that allows Amy Lee to demonstrate her vocal chops in a spiritual successor to early career favourites such as Lithium.
While the album sags a little toward the end, it is ultimately buoyed by that strong opening and an equally potent middle, with How Do I Heal and About Us delivering everything fans have come to know and love of Evanescence.
Lee still sounds every bit as brilliant as ever, and their orchestral bent has fleshed out their sound to include rousing passages of strings and keys alongside the guitars and drums.
While Evanescence couldn’t hope to harness the commercial rock clout of a Bring Me To Life or My Immortal in the fractured modern landscape, ‘Sanctuary’ is a worthy attempt at running back the sounds that once made them an essential band, its electronic flourishes helping them move with the times without losing the essence of who they are.
