With a sound that spans jazz, rock and indie-folk, Mitski has proven to be one of the most eclectic artists of her generation. Fresh from the huge acclaim that greeted 2023’s ‘The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We’, her eighth album is, once again, a genre-hopping masterwork that shows a wonderful songwriter at her very best.
One of the first tastes of the album was the single Where’s My Phone, built around gritty guitars in a manner that felt like a return to Mitski’s early records. But it is something of a red herring, with the rest of the LP darting between a number of styles in typical mid-career Mitski fashion.
The Lake, which opens the album, almost feels like a traditional folk song, with soft guitars and Mitski’s gorgeous vocals to the fore. Her range is one of her biggest strengths and an asset that allows her to slip so effortlessly between disparate genres.
Cats begins with a similar recipe before it gradually incorporates horns in a wonderful melange. The haunting Dead Women, too, has a slow build and lingering darkness at its heart — it is deeply cinematic.
I’ll Change for You, is a stunning track that could have been lifted from a vocal jazz album of yesteryear. Mitski’s voice is a natural fit, not dissimilar to Laufey’s and the musicianship is top drawer, especially the strings, horns and piano.
Mitski could quite comfortably make an album in this style, but it’s to her credit that she immediately swerves into Rules, which leans again into alt-rock without entirely losing sight of those jazz flecks. In another artist’s hands, such a mix could prove distracting, but on this album, it is constantly exciting.
‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me’ feels like a bridge between the melancholy sounds found on Mitski’s previous record and her earlier, more guitar-driven work. It’s a fine accomplishment and an evolutionary step that adds to an already very strong body of work. In fact, we could be in the presence of a musician assembling one of the great modern discographies.
