Buck Meek - The Mirror (Album Review)

Thursday, 05 March 2026 Written by Jack Press

If 2023’s ‘Haunted Mountain’ was Buck Meek arriving at the summit, ‘The Mirror’ reflects what he found when he got there: a world so alive with warmth, curiosity, and human feeling that you never want to leave it. The Big Thief guitarist’s fourth solo record, and finest to date, treats love not as a destination but as an ongoing act of study: patient and searching, equal parts heartache and joy.

Ring of Fire captures devotion at its most luminous, synths sparkling like stars above vocal harmonies that reach into your chest, as Meek holds the duality of loving someone and being away from them: “I’ve seen angels fly every night above our bed / but all I see is white fluorescent light in this hotel.”

On Demon, electric guitars veer down an American highway as extraterrestrial synths push back and Mary Lattimore’s harp hides somewhere in the mix, a thread waiting to be found and followed.

Meek’s chorus turns the push and pull of mental health into something unexpectedly freeing: “My demon is my darkness and my darkness is my angel / I taught him how to read, now I’m teaching him to write.”

Soul Feeling then widens the lens to encompass grief, Adam Brisbin's feedback-laced guitar dissolving to reflect Meek’s words: “Memories are disappearing / but he’s still got his soul feeling.” Closer Outta Body is where everything quietly arrives — Meek has spent years learning how to grab hold of a feeling and here he shows us how to do the same.

‘The Mountain’ is an album that rewards patience, continually revealing something new — a harmony missed, a synth breathing beneath the surface, a harp note tucked into a corner. Meek recorded his vocals on the front porch of his log cabin, looking through the window at the band playing inside. ‘The Mirror’ sounds exactly like that image feels.
