Prince: “I Can’t Stand Digital Music’

Friday, 24 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Prince has stated that he “can’t stand digital music”, claiming that it is harder to connect emotionally with a digital version of a track than with traditional formats. Speaking to The Guardian this week, the veteran singer said that he is definitely a fan of analogue recordings, condemning their digital counterparts because “you can’t feel anything” when listening to them.

Speaking to the paper, he said: "I personally can't stand digital music. You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital."

Prince went on to claim that the influence of the internet is “completely over”, talking about his decision not to make his album ‘20Ten’ available for online download. He said: “The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it, and then they get angry when they can't get it.”

Prince continued: “The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers, and that can't be good for you."

The singer also discussed Glastonbury festival, which takes place this weekend. Prince denied festival organiser Michael Eavis’ claims that he had been asked to perform, stating that the Worthy Farm event attempt to use his name as an association in order to sell tickets. "They use my name to sell the festival," he said. "It's illegal. I've never spoken to anyone about doing that concert, ever."

Despite not playing this year’s Glastonbury, Prince will be headlining the Hop Farm festival next weekend (July 1st-3rd).
