Microsoft to Launch Xbox Music Streaming Service

Facebook’s hopes to release a music service were uncovered this week – now Microsoft are reported to be following suit after revealing plans to launch a music discovery service on the Xbox this autumn.

The proposed project, currently known as Xbox Music, will see Xbox users able to locate music from a selection of over 11million songs. Players using a Kinect controller will also be able to voice control the program, meaning they can find and play a song using only their mouth.

Xbox Music was unveiled by Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer at an event yesterday, and comes after Microsoft combined its Zune and Xbox products to create a music and video subscription service back in 2009.

However Microsoft have since issued a statement denying any intention for the launch of a new music streaming service on the Xbox in the Autumn.

A statement issued today read: "Reports that Microsoft is launching a new music service on Xbox this fall are inaccurate. A recent demonstration of upcoming Xbox features showcased what we will deliver later this fall on Xbox, including voice search with Bing on Xbox to locate and access entertainment content on the console. This includes Zune music which has a catalog of more than 11 million tracks. "
