The Manic Street Preachers are in the mix to win the first ever Welsh Music Prize, alongside musician Gruff Rhys and rockers The Blackout.
The new award has been created by Welsh DJ Huw Stephens and promoter John Roston to highlight the brilliant music Wales makes, and The Manic Street Preachers are likely candidates following last year’s ‘Postcards from a Young Man.’
There a number of quality acts on the shortlist for the award, including the Manics, Gruff Rhys, The Blackout as well as post-hardcore band Funeral for a Friend, three-piece The Joy Formidable and dubstep producer Stagga.
“We are very pleased to launch the Welsh Music Prize with twelve strong albums from Welsh artists,” Stephens said. “The shortlist is but a reflection on the quality music made in Wales and released internationally.
“We hope the Prize brings these collections of work to a new audience, and we are looking forward to announcing an overall winner on October 21st.”
The winner of the new award will be announced at the SWN festival in Cardiff in October.
The Manic Street Preachers will be performing a one-off spectacular show in London at Christmas time – where they’ll be playing through 38 of their biggest hits in chronological order. The show will truly be a one of a kind experience for any Manics fan – if you’d like to buy tickets, check the link below.
