Inspired by time away from the spotlight, some of it spent dancing in Berlin nightclubs, and being a participant in the live music scene rather than a spectacle, Harry Styles’ ‘Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally’ is a shimmering record that promises to “let the light in”.
Brimming with high-tempo house beats, a gospel choir, an attempt at rap and hooks aplenty, Styles is keen to flex his musical prowess and varied influences, proving he’s no one-trick pony. Lead single Aperture found Styles ditching the pop-rock of ‘Harry’s House’ for decks and dancefloor fillers.
The pulsating Are You Listening Yet? is driven by thumping drums and rap-like verses, while the bassline and cascading synths of Ready Steady Go complement Styles’ airy AutoTuned vocals.
Season 2 Weight Loss embraces breakbeats and is elevated by its backing vocalist in its chorus, namely Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell, who makes appearances across the album.
Pop, like its title, is fizzy and itching to explode into its infectious chorus. Its playful (“squeaky clean fantasy”, “It’s nice to mix two flavours”) and LCD Soundsystem-inspired bridge demonstrate Styles’ dedication to the cathartic and carefree nature of this record. Coming Up Roses is a gorgeous, sweeping number where orchestral flourishes are counterbalanced by Styles’ rawest performance, his voice slightly breaking while adding to the feeling of authenticity.
Dance No More is a standout, transporting the listener straight to a ‘70s discothèque. Its chants of “You got to get your feet wet, teach them all to respect their mother” suggests Styles has been influenced by the ballroom scene (an underground subculture founded by African-American and Latin members of the LGBTQ+ community) while his One Night Only show featured an extended call-and-response segment in the song, suggesting it as a staple on summer’s stadium tour setlist.
There are blips — American Girls feels slightly regressive, with its vanilla chorus and a melody not too dissimilar from 2019’s Lights Up — but ‘Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally’ is an album brimming with dizzying highs and a welcome sense of optimism. It is undoubtedly Styles’ most experimental work to date, and yet it doesn’t lose sight of the big choruses and kaleidoscopic melodies he’s become known for. At its best, it’s euphoric.
