Demi Lovato’s ninth studio album is a refreshing departure in sound and substance, embracing techno, dance-pop, and EDM with a barrage of infectious hooks and thumping instrumentals. Newly married and entering a new chapter of her life, Lovato is seemingly at her happiest and most comfortable creatively on ‘It’s Not That Deep’, skipping around any desire to be diaristic or relive too many of her traumas. After all, so much of her personal life has been, unfairly, made so very public.
Lead single and opener Fast is a throbbing radio-ready banger, complete with sleek and shiny production courtesy of Zhone. The real highlight arrives on recent single Kiss, a camp, cheeky hit in the vein of Confidence Man and Jade’s Gossip.
Frequency nods to both Charli XCX and Britney Spears with its sizzling beat and contrasting spoken verses and honeyed pre-chorus. Lyrically, many of the tracks find Lovato ruminating on love. “I found somebody who can match my frequency,” she belts.
Though a little on the nose, Sorry to Myself is thematically more similar to previous albums. “I was the king of pain / I always found a new way to complain,” sings a self-deprecating Lovato, before the revelation: “Now I’m flirting with hope.”
It’s a gentle reminder to be kinder to herself, and this new era truly feels like Lovato is putting herself first, making the kind of celebratory music she wants to listen to. Before I Knew You is a kaleidoscopic synth-laden number, and the album’s poppiest track while reflecting on a past lover who was no good for her self-esteem: “I liked me more before I knew you.”
Closer Ghost is perhaps the best showcase of Lovato’s vocal range, and each note is held with power and precision. The result is spine-tingling. “I have a tendency to dwell on all the darkest possibilities,” she sighs, voicing her fears about commitment and time’s cruelty, as haunting AutoTuned harmonies fade in and out in the background.
‘It’s Not That Deep’ is a concise 32 minutes, with each track packing a punch, and primed for the club. Lovato has put confessional storytelling and her pop-punk roots on the backburner for an album that succeeds in selling itself on vibes. It is her most cohesive work to date, and a feelgood album that leans into contemporary dance-pop without losing its identity.
