On her ninth album, and first in eight years, Swedish electro-pop auteur Robyn ruminates on romantic love, its dizzying highs and plummeting falls, through a cocktail of techno, EDM, house, and even a witty Raya-themed rap, without compromising the quirky brilliance she has become synonymous with.
Joining forces with long-time collaborator Klas Åhlund, ‘Sexistential’ kicks things off with Really Real, an undulating techno anthem that grounds us in a rose-tinted early romance before the illusion shatters and Robyn is left questioning whether the relationship is really worth it. An anxious late-night phone call to her mother and a spiky guitar solo see the track out.
Dopamine explores the inevitability of love and sex, and the temporary rush they can facilitate, atop textured synths. On the futuristic AutoTune-enhanced Blow My Mind, Robyn oscillates between feelings of desire and her maternal instinct, in awe of her own body and the life it can create.
She dismantles the regressive societal expectations placed upon mothers and women of a certain age; that they cannot be both passionate and sexy as well as parents. “My body’s a spaceship,” she marvels, before breaking into a rap about dating apps, discos, and crushing on Adam Driver during the freaky house bop of a title track.
Closer Into The Sun is an Icarus-style lament on the sacrifices we make for love. But in typical Robyn fashion it’s also a hopeful one, with the artist finding strength in making herself vulnerable in the pursuit of love: “And I don’t care if I’m too high or close to the edge / With your light on my face, I will go all the way.”
On ‘Sexistential’, Robyn is eccentric and unyielding. The production and luscious techno beats are glossier than ever, and her influence on post-2010 pop music cannot be understated. A master at work.
