The Twilight Sad have come a long way since their iconic debut ‘Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters’ nearly two decades ago, and they’re still pushing themselves. Their sixth effort ‘It’s The Long Goodbye’ may be their most vulnerable to date, detailing vocalist James Graham’s experience of losing his mother to dementia while also becoming a father for the first time.
Opener Get Away From It All promptly sets the scene for what’s to come, finding beauty in Graham’s fragile state of mind after his mother’s diagnosis. Waiting For The Phone Call, too, is an irresistible synth number complete with an infectious guitar hook that barely conceals a sense of looming anxiety.
The Ceiling Underground’s slow-burn has something of Biffy Clyro about it, exposing the complexities of mental health and its physical symptoms.
“Will you dream with me? / Lock the door, no one can see / Will you dream with me? / My chest is sore now I can’t breathe,” Graham pleads.
Dead Flowers is a remarkable post-punk construction featuring The Cure’s Robert Smith on guitar and keys — justifying every second of its seven minutes, it’s unforgettable.
By the time we reach closer TV People Still Throwing TV’s At People, there seems to be a discernible sense of acceptance; almost catharsis. ‘It’s The Long Goodbye’ is a deeply personal and emotional journey from start to finish where The Twilight Sad sit agonisingly in the actuality of loss – a poignant but powerful record.
