Isobel Waller-Bridge - Objects (Album Review)

Thursday, 11 December 2025 Written by Issy Herring

Isobel Waller-Bridge has enjoyed success as a film, television and theatre composer, having previously formulated scores for Fleabag, Black Mirror and The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. Written over a period of four years, her new solo album ‘Objects’ provides a sense of stillness, gaining musical inspiration from simple household objects such as a shoe or glass while forcing you to shift into the present moment.

Pillow is a transfixing opener, with Waller-Bridge artfully overlaying sounds created by items typically found in a bedroom. They develop leisurely into a progressive crescendo that taps into her work as a composer, conjuring the feeling of a dramatic score.

Glass encapsulates some quintessential sounds on the streets of London, ranging from crowds in conversation to the blaring echoes of TFL announcements in the near distance. Glass-shattering snippets advance the track into something uncanny, adding further depth and experimental edge.

Objective Contemplation is sublime. The recurring use of woodwind and orchestral instrumentation elicits emotions ranging from contentment to sadness.

Hoover is insightful and clever, with Waller-Bridge’s use of the vacuum altered spectacularly, portraying a locomotive screeching along a line. Produced with endless imagination and creative control, it transcends into a shoegaze type melody reminiscent of The Horrors.

HZ is the jewel in the crown. Almost eight minutes in length, it is minimalistic in a manner that works to Waller-Bridge’s advantage. The track is almost hypnotic, allowing a state of relaxation amid total calm. ‘Objects’ has no creative limitations imposed on it, with Waller-Bridge’s ideas expanding as far as the ear can hear.
