Having gained fame and later notoriety thanks to their iconic debut and its follow up ‘Pinkerton’ in the mid-1990s, Weezer’s latest colour-coded, self-titled record doesn’t disappoint by rekindling some of the sounds that made them.
Armed with an exceedingly catchy chorus and tremendous vocals from Rivers Cuomo, Say Yes is an exquisite starting point. Written by drummer Patrick Wilson, meanwhile, lead single Shine Again is a somewhat unexpected but cool addition to their palette, throwing stoner-rock elements into the mix. Lyrically, the track expresses the band’s regained confidence in their craft.
Don’t Make It Weird sounds like an energetic power pop cut from The Click Five, its hook primed to get stuck in your head for months to come.
C.E.O. is also a highlight, detailing the ongoing pressure Cuomo feels to excel commercially. “Stop complaining / And give the people what they want / Here comes the C.E.O / I gotta keep this rocket in the sky (Gotta keep this rocket in the sky),” he belts.
A real plus point of ‘Weezer’ is its short duration, coming in strong at only 30 minutes while keeping the quality high. Highlighting the band’s vulnerabilities after a lengthy career in the industry, it is believably heartfelt and honest while also soaring with confidence throughout. A joy from start to finish.
