It has now been a decade since ‘Into the Wild Life’ applied a layer of gloss to Halestorm’s hard-rock and sent them into the stratosphere, but their sixth album shows that they’re not interested in resting in place. ‘Everest’ sheds expectations, exposing raw vulnerability and depth as they flex their creative muscles in new ways.
Fallen Star is a fantastic opener, shifting effortlessly between gritty riffs and more emotional moments. The title track soars on the back of Lzzy Hale’s incredible vocal and Joe Hottinger’s outstanding guitar solo. “I climb Everest / Knowing it’s life or death,” Lzzy belts mercilessly.
Shiver is the peak of ‘Everest’, though. Heartfelt from beginning to end in its unpicking of romantic complexity, it’s almost matched by Rain Your Blood On Me, a larger than life track now given added poignancy by its performance at Black Sabbath and the late Ozzy Osbourne’s Back To The Beginning event.
Elsewhere, Gather The Lambs boasts an explosive chorus and Watch Out! Dials up the heaviness alongside a wonderful melody reminiscent of Godsmack’s Vampire. Closing ballad How Will You Remember Me? captures ‘Everest’ in a nutshell. Captivating in its melancholy, it reminisces on the past while sprinkling an air of optimism about the future.
It’s the perfect finale to a record that, from its rip-roaring guitars to genuine sense of feeling, takes you on a rollercoaster ride. ‘Everest’ is another turning point in Halestorm’s lengthy career — they are prepared to stay firmly in their own lane.
