After becoming a household name in the early 2010s thanks to hits such as Price Tag, Jessie J has ridden waves of uncertainty in the wake of 2014’s ‘Sweet Talker’, which housed her last genuine smash in the form of the Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj collab Bang Bang. Some level of critical acclaim followed with ‘R.O.S.E.’, but her profile remained at a simmer. That might change with ‘Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time’, a record that’s deeply personal and accomplished.
Dealing with themes of grief and joy following a miscarriage and cancer diagnosis, Jessie J also reclaims her status as a vocal powerhouse on tracks such as the opener Feel It On Me, kicking the album off strongly with a ‘90s R&B melody at the helm.
I Don’t Care is a clear message to those in abusive relationships to leave and celebrate yourself. “You can't sugar-coat it / You can’t tell me nothing / Can’t fix it with no loving / See my eyes, they’re rolling / Chasing but I’m going / I don’t care,” she exclaims.
No Secrets is an eye-opening highlight. Jessie speaks lyrically about her personal experiences with loss, as well as dealing with life in the public eye and commemorating recent motherhood. Comes In Waves is a message to her lost child, resulting in a profoundly moving song filled with heartache and hope for the future.
I’ll Never Know Why is equally as poignant, discussing her gut-wrenching experience of losing someone special to mental health problems. Co-written with Marty Rod and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, H.A.P.P.Y. is a total contrast. While its chorus has the potential to prove irksome, it is unquestionably the most light-hearted and infectious on the tracklist.
While sixteen tracks may be slightly excessive, even in the age of streaming, ‘Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time’ is Jessie J’s finest work, fully authenticating her as a songwriter capable of emotional clarity as well as a breathtaking vocalist.
