Tom Smith is best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Editors, releasing seven studio albums with the post-punk band since 2005. His first solo LP is a departure from the indie sounds of his day job, with ‘There is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light’ incorporating elements of folk alongside his signature vocal style.

Underpinned by acoustic guitars, Deep Dive puts his voice at the forefront of things, gradually building a sense of atmosphere, and How Many Times continues in a similar vein, full of wry humour and reflective lyrics about learning from mistakes.

It’s a soothing listen with beauty to be found in its simplicity, with more elements mixed in gently as it moves along.

Life is For Living also expands upon the folk sounds found across the record, with strings lurking in the background but never stealing Smith’s spotlight. It has a soaring cinematic quality with a moving sense of optimism at its core.

Broken Time, though, is classic folk, simply composed of vocals and guitar. It’s one of the prettiest tracks on the record, cramming plenty into its sub-three-minute run time as Smith proves how adept he is at shifting between styles. Lights of New York City, with its prominent horns, feels oddly festive, and as we move into the Christmas season, it may become a favourite for fans.

Even if ‘There is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light’ ends up being a one-off project, there is plenty to admire and revisit here. It’s full of intimate, soul-baring lyrics, and maturity both in its themes and Smith’s performances.
