Some 15 years on from her emergence with ‘The Family Jewels’, Marina Diamandis is still thriving on ‘Princess of Power’, a record that explores what power really means for a woman in the music industry, with chamber-pop, new wave and electro folded into songs that are influenced by ABBA as much as they are by Kylie Minogue.
Having retired her “and the Diamonds” name pre-pandemic and split with Atlantic following the release of ‘Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land’ in 2021, the title track is a strong start that celebrates creative freedom, with an infectious synth-led chorus.
Butterfly is a powerful moment, manoeuvring into alt-pop territory while detailing Marina’s emerging self-confidence and rebirth as an artist through the titular metaphor. Cuntissimo is the ultimate highlight, though.
Here, Marina showcases a real sense of strength over a thumping techno beat, which is thoroughly addictive from start to finish.
The lyrics are truly special with a relatable yet valuable message, launching the track to anthemic status. “Your ex is hitting you up / But you no longer give a fuck / Leaving that loser on read / Don't let him back in your bed / ’Cause your energy's precious / Not your fault he fell in love,” Marina sings assertively.
Cupid’s Girl switches things up with Marina’s breathy vocals taking the lead over efficacious new wave production, detailing the anticipation of a new romantic relationship. Following this, Metallic Stallion is a dramatic ballad, centered around Marina’s frustration with a narcissistic lover — it’s exceptionally believable and raw.
Final Boss is a faultless closer that is spun off from retro video gaming. Giving winning main character energy, it is a great final twist. Combining the playful nature of 2012’s ‘Electra Heart’ with a celebration of female empowerment and sexuality, ‘Princess of Power’ is a fresh and electrifying addition to Marina’s discography.
