The Twilight Sad have announced their first album in seven years.

'It's The Long Goodbye', the long-awaited, emotionally powerful follow-up to 2019's 'It Won/T Be Like This All The Time', will arrive on March 27 via Rock Action Records.

It marks the Scottish post-punk band's sixth full-length release to date, and draws on the loss of singer and lyricist James Graham's mother to early-onset frontotemporal dementia in 2023, which led to a severe decline in his own mental health.

"It had to contain every element of emotion I was feeling," Graham explained. "In the past I’ve used a lot of metaphors within my lyrics. With this, there’s not as much. The record is heavily influenced by my mental health, grief and loss, and the need to be strong in positions where you’re not feeling it.

"It’s a very human story, I think – this is just my version of it. I feel that everybody goes through something like this. Everybody loses somebody. Everybody questions life."

After sharing the album's lead single, Waiting For The Phone Call, featuring The Cure's Robert Smith on guitar, last October, the duo have dropped another preview with Designed To Lose, a moving track that reflects on the struggles of feeling doomed to fail, even when dealing with loss.

"To know that I’m saying things that connect with other people, that’s such a powerful thing," Graham continued. "I want to be a relatable person that talks about things that can happen and give an opportunity for people to go, well, you’re not alone.

"I want people to be able to listen to this record and hear that it comes from a place of raw emotion. The album is an opportunity to share my experience and move forward with my life."

The band will support the record with a UK and European tour in the spring, followed by a number of dates supporting The Cure, and an appearance at North Yorkshire's Deer Shed Festival in the summer. Tickets for all shows are on sale now.
