It is no surprise that Laufey’s rise has occurred during a time of such uncertainty. Her knack for crafting entrancing jazz and classical music seems to refer back to simpler times, while her lyrics offer contrast by lending themselves to modern woes.
‘A Matter of Time’ finds the Berklee-educated composer and multi-instrumentalist at her most creatively daring, enlisting The National’s Aaron Dessner to co-produce with long-time collaborator Spencer Stewart. With a hit debut in 2022 and a Grammy-winning sophomore LP following in 2023, Laufey’s third full length continues her hot streak while detailing the thrilling highs and devastating lows of a relationship.
Clockwork begins with the inevitability of falling in love as Laufey acknowledges going against her better judgment: “I know it’s irrational, at least I’m self-aware.” Lover Girl is the album’s earworm and a late contender for song of the summer, sauntering along full of pep and romance.
Forget-Me-Not boasts a stunning vocal performance, while Too Little, Too Late is an exercise in musical and emotional catharsis, with encroaching strings and percussion teased before building to an epic final chorus.
The thematic thread of time crops up again on the instrumental Cuckoo Ballet, an exquisite composition embellished by a sprightly woodwind melody and more melancholy brass and string segments.
On Tough Luck, Laufey is furious, refusing to tolerate a lover with a pattern of troubling behaviour. Musically speaking, it is perhaps the most uncomplicated song on the album, underpinned by a raw acoustic guitar. Closer Sabotage, meanwhile, is the closest thing to a ballad and perhaps the album’s biggest surprise — its final third descends into an amalgam of dissonant horns, frenzied strings, tumbling keys and haunting harmonies before reaching an abrupt end.
On ‘A Matter of Time’, Laufey impresses with her most cohesive record to date. Each track feels distinctive, as she explores new musical territory whilst still imbuing the album with the signature sound that listeners have grown to love. Paired with its soul-baring lyrics and the occasional knowing wink, it’s only a matter of time before this LP is considered a classic.
